Introduction & Core Philosophy
IndicStudio is committed to developing private, respectful, and transparent mobile software. Indic Notes is built from the ground up as an offline-first writing utility. We believe that your private thoughts, notes, and writings should belong solely to you.
Indic Notes does not require user account registration, does not connect to proprietary external cloud servers, displays no advertisements, and includes zero tracking or analytics SDKs.
Information Handled by the Application
2.1 Note Content & Metadata (Local Only)
When you create or edit notes in Indic Notes, the following information is stored directly on your device:
- Note titles and body text
- Color tint selections and pinned status
- Created and last modified timestamps
- Archive and trash status flags
- User preference flags (view mode layout, sort order, default color)
Storage Location: All data is stored locally in an SQLite database (indic_notes.db) located within the private internal application sandbox (/data/data/com.indicstudio.notes/databases/). Other applications installed on your device cannot access this data without root privileges.
2.2 Permissions Audit
Indic Notes requests zero runtime permissions and zero system permissions. Specifically:
- No android.permission.INTERNET: The application has no technical capability to communicate over local networks or the internet.
- No Storage Permissions: Does not access shared media or external SD cards.
- No Location / Camera / Microphone: Hardware sensors are never accessed.
Data Leaving Your Device
3.1 Explicit User Sharing
The only mechanism by which information from Indic Notes can leave your device is when you explicitly initiate an action via the system Share icon. When triggered, the selected note's plain-text content is handed to the native Android OS Share Sheet (Intent.ACTION_SEND), allowing you to choose the destination application (such as an email client, messaging app, or document editor). That data transfer is governed by the privacy policy of the application you choose to receive the text.
3.2 Operating System Backups
The application manifest enables standard Android system backups (android:allowBackup="true") guided by explicit backup rules (res/xml/backup_rules.xml and res/xml/data_extraction_rules.xml). If you have enabled Android Cloud Backup or Google Drive backup in your Android device settings, your local SQLite database may be backed up to your personal cloud backup storage. This process is operated entirely by Google and your Android OS under your Google Account privacy policy. You may disable this at any time in your device's system settings.
Third-Party Libraries & Dependencies
Indic Notes uses only vetted, official Android Open Source Project (AOSP) and Jetpack libraries:
- AndroidX Core, Lifecycle, and Activity Compose
- Jetpack Compose Material 3 UI toolkit
- AndroidX Room SQLite abstraction library
- AndroidX DataStore Preferences library
No third-party ad networks, telemetry trackers, crash-reporting SDKs, or external analytics services are bundled with this application.
Children's Privacy
Because Indic Notes is a general productivity tool that does not collect personal information or transmit data over the network, it complies with the requirements of the Children’s Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA) and the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR). We do not knowingly collect or solicit information from children under 13.
Retention and Deletion
You retain complete control over your data:
- Deleting a note inside the app immediately removes it from active views (or permanently deletes it from the database).
- Clearing the app storage or uninstalling Indic Notes from your device immediately and permanently deletes all locally stored notes and preferences from your phone's sandbox.
Changes to This Privacy Policy
If we update our privacy practices or introduce new features in future versions, this document will be updated with a revised effective date.
